Clarifying the confusion with the COVID-19 test

COVID-19 is a coronavirus. There are other coronaviruses that people can have, including the viruses that cause the low level viral common cold.

The COVID-19 test is a combination of two tests.

Test 1 This looks at the E. gene, which is common to all betacoronaviruses. If this test is negative, it screens out the majority of non cases. When someone is ‘presumed positive’, investigators determine if they have been in contact with a confirmed case. This does NOT mean that the person definitely has COVID-19.

Test 2 This test looks for a gene sequence in the RNA of COVID-19 (rather similar to looking for gene sequences in our DNA). The second test is expensive and time consuming. If someone tests positive in this test, then they 100 percent have COVID-19.

Extensive research is underway worldwide to speed up the testing for COVID-19.
